Dr. Jorge Soberón Joins Board of All Species Foundation

I am delighted to announce that Dr. Jorge Soberón has accepted an appointment to the Board of the All Species Foundation. Currently serving as Executive Secretary of the Mexico's National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (CONABIO), Dr. Soberón was trained as a mathematical ecologist. In addition, he is an expert on neotropical Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) and maintains an active taxonomic and biogeographic research program on these organisms. In his role with CONABIO, which continues, he has been working in projects related to the inventory of Mexican biodiversity and the creation of the information systems needed to the management of the data.

Most recently, he hosted a very successful meeting in Mexico City (co-sponsored by CONABIO, the Center for Applied Biodiversity Science of Conservation International, and the All Species Foundation) bringing together biodiversity experts from more than a dozen megadiversity countries from around the world. The upshot was a resounding call to move forward with plans to develop a project to discover and name all species.

For all these reasons, and because he is a passionate advocate of completing the inventory or life on Earth within the next quarter century, it is highly appropriate that Jorge Soberón would join the Board of the All Species Foundation, and I extend to him a warm welcome. Other Board members of the Foundation include Kevin Kelly (Chairman), Stewart Brand, Terry Erwin, Ryan Phelan, and Peter Warshall.
