Outreach/Events
In early May, All Species will host a Digital Imaging Workshop at the California Academy of Sciences (CAS) in
San Francisco. This all-day workshop will include the world's leading expert on digital imaging,
Piotr Naskrecki, from the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University. We anticipate enlisting one or more technology vendors to provide cutting edge tools.
The Workshop will focus on hands-on experimentation with state-of-the art imaging equipment and has 3 key objectives:
- To identify the issues and challenges of digitizing "hard-to-image organisms"
- To develop agreed upon baseline target numbers including the state and size of holotype collections worldwide to help better plan for costs and time to digitize collections
- To discuss ways to creatively fund digital equipment in the major natural history collections, how to leverage any equipment acquired across various institutions, train volunteers, manage for increased through-put, and develop benchmarks for success
The evening of the CAS imaging workshop, ALL will co-host an "In Context" event for Friends and Funders. This will be a reception and attendees will be given an overview of ALL and the outcomes and lessons from the day's workshop.
In March, All Species was a co-sponsor of the Towards A Catalogue of Life conference in Sydney Australia. We demonstrated the Species Search Engine product to an assembled group of taxonomists and technologists and stirred up intense conversation and interest about how we could best apply our efforts to attain mutual goals.
