First Major Donation To The All Species Inventory Project Comes From One Of Its Participant Scientists
All Species is pleased to announce a contribution of $1 million seed funding from entomologist Evert Schlinger,
who participated in the founding conference for the organization in September.
The gift will come from the Schlinger Foundation in 2000 - 2001.
Evert I. Schlinger is Professor Emeritus, Department of Entomological Sciences, University of California,
Berkeley. He studies spider parasitoids of the fly family Acroceridae (Diptera). His laboratory, located
in Santa Ynez, California, is currently associated with the Department of Entomology, California Academy
of Sciences, San Francisco, California, where he is also a Fellow.
He is engaged in a long term, world-wide study to elucidate the phylogeny, biogeography, and biology of
acrocerids, and their Jurassic co-evolutionary history with their host spiders. Dr. Schlinger is above all
an explorer, dedicated to science. Starting with the initial discovery and collection identification, he
correlates his studies of fly distribution with complex evolutionary changes. As part of his enthusiasm
for the All Species project, Dr. Schlinger is particularly interested in ways that new technologies can
accelerate the collection and processing of specimens so that taxonomists like himself can spend more
time in the field and in the laboratory preparing monographs.
